"How many portable toilets do I need?" is the single most common question we get. The answer depends on whether you are planning an event, running a construction site, or responding to an emergency — and within each category, it depends on duration, demographics, alcohol service, and ADA access. This guide gives the formulas, the worked examples, and the common-mistake corrections you need to size your order correctly the first time.

Events — the baseline formula
Industry standard, used by every reputable provider and most permit offices:
1 standard unit per 50 guests for a 4-hour event.
Scale by:
- +15% if alcohol is served. Drinking guests use restrooms ~15–20% more often.
- +15% if demographics skew majority female. Women take, on average, ~1.5× longer per restroom visit.
- +20% at 6 hours, +35% at 8 hours, +50% at all-day. Use grows with duration.
- +1 ADA unit minimum, ratio 1 per 20 standard units thereafter.
- +1 hand-wash station per 4 standard units; more for food-service events.
Worked example: 100-guest wedding, 4-hour reception, full bar
100 ÷ 50 = 2 units baseline. +15% for alcohol = 2.3. Round up to 3 standard units, plus 1 ADA, plus 1 hand-wash. Or: a 2-stall luxury trailer + 1 ADA + 1 hand-wash — the more common wedding choice because the trailer feels like a real bathroom and shows up well in photos. See Wedding Portable Toilet Rentals.
Worked example: 200-guest wedding, 5-hour reception, full bar
200 ÷ 50 = 4 baseline. +15% alcohol = 4.6. +20% for 5-hour duration = 5.5. Round up to 6 standard units + 1 ADA + 1 hand-wash. Or: 2-stall luxury trailer + 1 ADA + 1 hand-wash, which is the more common pick at this size.
Worked example: 500-attendee 5K, 3 hours
500 ÷ 50 = 10 baseline at 4 hours. Scale down slightly for 3-hour duration → ~9 units. Add 1 ADA, 2 hand-wash stations. Stage clusters at start/finish chute, water-stop areas, and post-race expo. Schedule a pre-event top-off the morning of and post-event pickup the next business day.
Worked example: 2,000-attendee community festival, 6 hours, food vendors
2,000 ÷ 50 = 40 baseline. +20% for 6-hour duration = 48. Round up to 50 standard. Add 3 ADA units (1 per 20). Food vendors trigger DEHQ Temporary Food Facility hand-wash requirements: 12–15 hand-wash stations distributed by zone. Schedule mid-event service in the second half. Worked example: 5,000-attendee one-day festival, 8 hours
5,000 ÷ 50 = 100 baseline at 4 hours. +35% for 8-hour duration = 135 standard. Add 5–7 ADA units (1 per 20). Add 25–30 hand-wash stations. Construction — Cal/OSHA Title 8 CCR §1526 ratio
- 1 toilet for 1–20 workers
- 2 toilets for 21–35 workers
- 3 toilets for 36–55 workers
- 4 toilets for 56–80 workers
- +1 toilet per each additional 30 workers above 80

Worked example: residential framing, 12-person crew
12 workers = 1 toilet required. Add a hand-wash station. Weekly servicing covers a 5-person crew on one unit; with 12 people on the same unit, bump to twice-weekly to keep the unit usable and inspector-ready.
Worked example: commercial tilt-up, 45-person peak crew
45 workers = 3 toilets required by Cal/OSHA. Add 2 hand-wash stations. Schedule three-times-weekly service for the heavy phases (foundation through framing) and downshift to weekly for finish trades.
Worked example: multifamily project, 90-person peak crew
90 workers = 4 toilets per §1526 (the 4-toilet bracket covers 56–80, and the +1 per 30 above 80 puts the threshold for a 5th at 111). Add 2–3 hand-wash stations. Daily servicing during peak phases; weekly during start-up and final trim. See Construction Site Portable Toilets.
Emergency response — quick sizing
For commercial plumbing failures and HOA water shutoffs, the rule of thumb is 1 deluxe flushing unit per 25–30 affected occupants, plus an ADA unit on the closest accessible exterior path, plus one hand-wash station per cluster. How service frequency interacts with unit count
Often the right answer is fewer units serviced more often. A single unit on daily service can handle 30+ users per day comfortably; the same unit on weekly service struggles past 10. Common mistakes
- Counting GC employees only on construction. Subs count toward the §1526 total.
- Under-ordering events by 20–30%. The most common event mistake.
- Skipping the ADA unit. Required for any public event in San Diego County and for many private venue contracts.
- Skipping hand-wash on food events. The DEHQ inspector will note it.
- Using event-day rates for a multi-day rental. Multi-day rentals usually get a per-day discount starting day two.
- Putting all the units in one cluster at a 5,000+ attendee event. Distribute across 4–6 zones keyed to the venue map.
